Traumatic stress may have higher numbers of medical conditions and long term effects on the body such as aging and early death. Type II diabetes, heart disease and dementia also occur alongside with PTSD, causing researchers to consider it as something having possible long-term effects on both the mind and the body. Smoking, substance abuse, unhealthy diet, eating disorders, and poor sleep also commonly occur with PTSD, which may lead to poorer health and early death.
